Everything On It

I was a little disappointed in this new Silverstein book. Twins A and B enjoyed reading it in the back of the car between travelling to and from violin lessons, but they didn't read and become enamoured with Shel's first poetry collections years ago in another century. I have the disadvantage of comparing any posthumous works with an eye prejudiced by nostalgia.

One poem from the collection seemed appropriate:

I've told you a hundred tall stories,
I've sung you a million ridiculous rhymes
(Though sometimes the grammar was wrong).
I've drawn you a zillion pictures,
So being fair as can be,
After all that I've writtensungtolddrawn for you,
Won't you writesingtelldraw one for me?

Invader Zim

Two years ago my sons were sneaking on my laptop to watch Pokemon. Last summer it was Phineas and Ferb. This summer it has been Invader Zim. I haven't watched any of the episodes, but I hear the kids quoting the show in loud screetchy voices nearly every day.

I rented these films on Itunes while we were on vacation in Germany. My kids normally prefer children's movies, but these extra long comedies were slapstick enough to keep them entertained.

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham

I started listening to the book on CD (read by Richard Thomas, A.K.A. John Boy Walton) in my car with my 5th grade daughters. They thought it was boring and only made it through the first disc. On the other hand, I persisted through to the end. It's a clever concept but rather prosaic compared to series like Harry Potter or Discworld that my kids and I devour.

An Expensive ($79 apiece) Cure for the Blues

We have a bored German teenager staying with us. We took her to see The Blue Man Group, which successfully alleviated her Weltschmerz for the evening. I even got a parking space directly in front of the theater.
